The Foundation for International Training (FIT) was established in Canada, in 1976, as a non-profit, development services organization.

FIT's mission is to further social and economic progress in developing countries by strengthening human capabilities. Its programs are designed to foster and increase the capacities of local institutions —voluntary, private or public—to strengthen human resources for development. This mission is predicated on the conviction that people—their institutions, skills and capabilities—are the most critical resources for development.  Since its inception FIT has completed more than 500 projects in over 60 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East financed by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and United Nations agencies and developing countries governments themselves.

Building capacities to manage development—within governments, among civil society organisations and in the private sector—is vital to ensuring equitable economic and social progress. FIT addresses this specific need through programs that aim to build capacities of local training institutions, service organizations, and NGOs to deliver skills development and training.
